Weekend Reflections - The River Runs Full

#skyviewers #sky #sunset #reflections #arkansasriver

We've had a lot of rain in Oklahoma lately, that coupled with rain in Kansas in the Arkansas River's drainage area has led the Corp of Engineers to increase the flow tremendously in the river downstream of Keystone Dam. The river is now running bank full and is running very fast and carrying trees and debris with it.

A few years ago during a drought I walked clear across the river bottom (it has a rock bottom) to within 30 feet of the other bank. I wouldn't get near the water now. A few weeks ago three young men drowned near where I took this photograph.

I grew up a couple of miles up 31st St. from the Arkansas River. I can remember times of drought and one time in probably the late 50s when half the men in town were filling and putting sand bags along the bank when flooding threatened.

Yogi, thanks for visiting my page! Been a couple years since I've contributed to SWF. Hoping to be back more often. LOVE your sky over the water. Incredible! Thanks for sharing, and for all you do.

What an incredible capture for the day!! Gorgeous skies!! Typical "all or nothing" weather for Oklahoma and Texas, as I remember! Have a great weekend!

Beautiful sky. Yes, we have had a lot of rain too. Totally opposite from last summer when we didn't see a single raindrop!! Kansas & OK weather always keeps you guessing. Have a great weekend. Mickie ;)

Beautiful sky and water picture. How sad that young men seem to feel invincible when it comes to being near water. We too have had our fair share of fatalities - so unnecessary.

It's good to be back:-)

Amazing how different a river can be from year to year. Our water is high here too.

The sky is beautiful!

A spectacular capture, Yogi.

Nice shot! Young men tend to get reckless around water when we have flash floods in Australia too..It's that yearning for adventure, misguided. Sad.

Pure burnished gold! Lovely picture. People do need to learn to respect the water (and nature). It is sad when they learn that lesson too late.

I guess that means no drought. Beautiful capture.
